The Ala. Governor has the power to grant commutations to persons under sentences of death and to remit fines and forfeitures. This series consists of letters and petitions relating to pardons from crimes, parole from sentences and remission of fines imposed. Most of the items request that the Governor grant executive clemency to a person who has been comvicted of a certain crime. The crimes are wide ranging, from murder and manslaughter to horse stealing. Often the crime and circumstances are described in detail. Cases of note include Chester Root convicted of duelling with John Hudson, and Jack, a Mobile Co. runaway slave belonging to Stacy B. Waters who was convicted of assault with intent to kill a white man. Other criminals seeking clemency include David Barfield, Benjamin Batts, James B. Clopton, John W. Derdin, Robert C. David, Jesse B. Kennedy, William G. Tucker and Thomas Waddle. The series contains numerous letters and petitions relating to a Limestone Co. case in which William Martin, George Hanks, Gayden P. Hanks and Thomas Hanks were all convicted of manslaughter.
